Statement
My concern is the human condition surprised by the grace of God. I combine abstraction and realism in my work, because both the visible and the invisible world are equally real and important. The Incarnation explains and resolves all seeming dichotomies of artistic imaginative work. ?In Christ all things hold together.? Jesus is both God and man, Spirit and flesh, as well as Word and image. Incarnational art attempts to give form to invisible absolutes.
I purposely juxtaposes image and text (Jesus is Word of God and Image of God) to create connections and metaphors that may not be predictable or seen immediately. But my use of words and images entices the viewer to consider the cosmic, eternally relevant, story of salvation as told in the Scriptures. I embed layered papers, old texts, and detritus relevant to the piece, and overlay them with translucent beeswax or varnish. Then by making marks, layering, and stripping away, I attempt to find the mystery in a piece and to fathom the biblical mysteries of Creation, Fall, and Redemption.
I attempt to create paintings that allude to the eternal story using metaphors and mystery. In this piece, I painted over a gold leafed panel to create suggest the eternal reality.
