Many Waters

Kristen Folden

I love that my art knows me better than I know myself, that it teaches me. When I am overcome by emotion, it helps me make sense of it all. I love that when I am creating, it is like a prayer to me. I love that I can display it for the world to see, or let it be hidden within the layers. I love that I can tell the story of each blank canvas I touch. Within mixed media, stories unfold layer after layer. Sometimes it's the words of a poem or song. Sometimes it's scraps of sheet music from a concert I am preparing for. I love including many different kinds of mediums together, such as hand painted rice paper, acrylics, chalk, oil, pastel, and watercolors. Sometimes I enjoy using coffee sleeves. Whatever it may be, I love it all. What I love most is when my art touches another soul. When someone is deeply moved by my art in ways I did not intend or realize, I know I have been moved to create by love, and that I was not painting alone. I love Madeleine L'Engle's words: "I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says, here I am. Enfleshed me. Give birth to me. This is my privilege and joy". I love to spend an evening with a brush in one hand, a glass of white in the other, with my kids around doing their own things and being together. I paint and play in Durango Colorado with my family and my puppy, Winnie, who I love.
