Frequently asked questions
The Breath and The Clay is a creative arts organization exploring the intersection of art, faith, and culture. Through conversations, presentations, and shared experiences, we create space for artists, thinkers, and seekers to reflect on creativity as a spiritual practice and a way of engaging the world with depth, beauty, and attention.
The Breath and The Clay is for artists, creators, culture-makers, and anyone who feels drawn to the creative life, even if they don’t identify as an artist. Past attendees include painters, musicians, writers, pastors, designers, photographers, entrepreneurs, spiritual directors, and individuals seeking to reconnect with imagination and meaning.
If you are curious about creativity and the spiritual life, you belong here.
Not at all. While many attendees are practicing artists, The Breath and The Clay is just as meaningful for those who engage creativity in less formal ways or who are simply curious about how art shapes faith, culture, and interior life.
You do not need to make art to benefit from the gathering. You only need a willingness to listen, reflect, and be present.
The Breath and The Clay is rooted in the Christian faith and shaped by its imagination, stories, and practices. We are an ecumenical community and value a wide range of voices and perspectives.
Not all of our presenters or participants share the same theological or religious commitments, and this is intentional. Creativity and the arts are our common ground. We believe honest conversation, beauty, and shared curiosity create space for meaningful dialogue across difference.
The yearly event includes a mix of talks, interviews, performances, panel conversations, artistic presentations, gallery crawls, workshops, interactive art installations, and moments of shared reflection. Participation is always invitational.
The gathering takes place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Specific venue details will be shared with registered attendees.
